Outside Mexico, the most celebrated Mexican festival is perhaps Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). However within Mexico almost no one celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The MOST important festival in the year and MOST widely celebrated in Mexico is the Mexican Independence Day on Sept 16th.
The Mexican Independence Day refers to the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted from Sept 16th, 1810 to Sept 27th, 1821. It is the celebration of ending 300 years of Spanish rule to become an independent nation.
So how does Mexicans celebrate their Independence Day? The celebration usually begins on the night of September 15th and carry on till the next day. It is marked by parades and marching bands, and sometimes even special programs and concerts. Any Mexican parties of course will not be complete without food and drinks! So every year on Sept 16th, large food parties are organized serving Tacos, Tostadas, Pozole, Birria beef stew and Tamales and accompany by unlimited Margarita and Tequila!
Today (14th Sept), verde MAR Will be catering the Mexican Consulate National Day Celebration featuring traditional Mexican dishes such as cochinita pibil, tacos, quesadilla, shrimp cocktail, rice pudding etc. at the Maritime Museum.
This year the Mexican Independence Day falls also on our Mid-Autumn Festival. So come visit Verde MAR and celebrate two festivals at the same time!
